cesser clause
A stipulation in a charter party that the charterer's liability thereunder shall cease when the vessel is loaded and the bills of lading are signed, the owner agreeing to settle with the consignees of the cargo all questions regarding freight, demurrage, and other liabilities, under the protection of his lien for charges. It is intended to free the charter, on his furnishing a full cargo, from possible liabilities cast upon him by the terms of the charter party, which, by its terms, he might otherwise personally be called on to discharge after the full cargo had been shipped on board. 48 Am J1st Ship § 325.
