casualty insurance

casualty insurance
Literally, this term is inclusive of insurance of all kinds except life insurance. In the insurance business, however, it has been a trade term applied with considerable variation as between insurance companies, often as a catch-all for new types of insurance as they are developed, such as plate glass insurance, hail insurance, boiler insurance, and insurance on domestic animals, Employers' Liability Assur. Corp. v Merrill, 155 Mass 404, 29 NE 529; and in more recent years to various forms of liability or indemnity insurance.
