Protestants

Protestants
Christians but not Roman Catholics or members of the Eastern Orthodox Church. In consequence of the protest against the decree of the Diet of Spires (or Spire or Speiers), held in Germany, under the Emperor Charles V, in 1529, the followers of Luther were denominated Protestants, a general term which was applied alike to all who adopted the principles of the Reformation in opposition to the Catholic Church, and which has continued to the present time. Hale v Everett, 53 NH 9.
