magnetic meridian
A great circle of the earth which passes through the magnetic, rather than the geographical, poles of the earth. 12 Am J2d Bound § 59. A meridian established by the employment of a magnetic compass without allowing for deviations in direction from the true meridian on account of magnetic variations in the needle of the compass. In the earlier private surveys made in the United States, it seems to have been the practice to run lines on the ground according to the magnetic meridian, and not according to the true meridian. 12 Am J2d Bound § 59. The Congressional survey of public lands is according to the true meridian. 43 USC § 751.
