judicial dicta
An expression of opinion by a court on a point not necessary to a decision but deliberately passed upon by the court. Scovill Mfg. Co. v Cassidy, 275 111 462, 114 NE 181. Sometimes given effect as a holding of the court. 20 Am J2d Cts § 190.
