freighter

freighter
A ship used for carrying cargo primarily; also the owner of the vessel hired under a contract of affreightment. The latter definition derives from the French and is not accepted in common-law jurisdictions without some disagreement. At times, the person to whom the vessel is let is called the "freighter."
