forum non conveniens

forum non conveniens
(Latin.) The doctrine or principle that where, in a broad sense, the ends of justice strongly indicate that the controversy may be more suitably tried elsewhere, jurisdiction should be declined and the parties relegated to relief to be sought in another forum. Universal Adjustment Corp. v Midland Bank, 281 Mass 303, 184 NE 152, 87 ALR 1407. The doctrine that an American court has power to decline to assume jurisdiction where the litigation is between aliens or nonresidents, or can more appropriately be conducted in a foreign tribunal. Canada Malting Co. v Paterson Steamships, 258 US 413, 76 L Ed 837, 52 S Ct 413.
