abjuration of the realm

abjuration of the realm
Originally a renunciation of one's country, upon oath of perpetual banishment, and the doctrine of abjuring the realm, by which a husband became civilly dead, was an incident of the right of sanctuary, which was abolished by statute under James the First. The meaning of the word has changed until it implies simply a total abandonment of the state; a departure from the state without intention of returning. Mead v Hughes' Adm. 15 Ala 141. See expatriation.
