exchequer

exchequer
The English department of revenue. A very ancient court of record, set up by William the Conqueror, as a part of the aula regia, and intended principally to order the revenues of the crown, and to recover the king's debts and duties. It was called exchequer, "scaccharium," from the checked cloth, resembling a chessboard, which covers the table. See barons of the exchequer; Black Book of the Exchequer; chancellor of the exchequer; court of exchequer; exchequer bills; information in the exchequer; receipt of the exchequer.
