destitute circumstances
A relative term. A wife or child is in "destitute circumstances" when in need of the necessities of life, meaning not only primitive physical needs, things absolutely indispensable to human existence and decency, but also things which are in fact necessary to him or her as an individual. State v Waller, 90 Kan 829, 136 P 215.
